| Frequently Asked Questions |
| |
How loud is the unit?
A number of factors contribute to the sound level in
a cellar: the design and size of the cellar itself, the materials
used to build and finish the cellar, the design and size
of the exhaust room. Other contributing factors to sound
include location of the cooling unit, proper installation
and unit model, for example correct ducting that utilizes
90° angles on an Extreme unit with a remote thermostat
will create a virtually sound free cellar.
Currently, decibel readings are unavailable.
|
What is the life expectancy of the unit?
A number of factors contribute the life expectancy of
your cooling unit:
- Proper Ventilation
- Proper Installation
- Proper Cellar Design
- Proper Maintenance
- In some cases, geographical location
Having a cooling unit in a cellar is unlike any other appliance
a customer would have in their home. Other than a refrigerator
that operates continually, no other appliance you own will
operate on a continuous basis. Keep in mind that a refrigerator
is built with correct insulation and manages the space inside
which is 30 cubic feet. A refrigerator will last 10 to
15 years.
A cellar can be 10 to 100 times larger. The cooling
unit will operate continuously as needed, 24 hours a day,
seven days a week, and 365 days per year. No other
appliance or even a car will be required to work as hard. That
is why wine cellar cooling units are specialized pieces of
equipment and the proper installation, ventilation and maintenance
(cleaning/ vacuuming coils) are critical to the unit’s
performance and longevity.
If 1-4 are appropriate, your unit could last 10 years or
longer, but like any appliance, the more it is used, the more
rapidly it will wear.
Please see our video, “How to Build a Wine Cellar” to
assure all important factors are accounted for.

Who is responsible for the WhisperKOOL installation and removal?
The customer is responsible for installing and removal
of the unit.
What does the warranty cover? How long is warranty period?
WhisperKOOL Units --two years parts & labor and five
years for the compressor itself, contingent upon correct
installation that is in compliance with Vinotheque standards,
please see above question.
Cabinets -- two years parts and labor, five years on
the compressor itself and five years for the integrity of
the cabinet.
Can I buy an extended warranty on my cabinet or WhisperKOOL?
Not at this time.
Why are WhisperKOOL rivets so difficult to access?
WhisperKOOL units are riveted shut to ensure that the
unit is not accessed or serviced during its warranty period. Opening
the unit during the warranty period voids the warranty.
Why can’t a service technician repair on site? Why must
a warranty unit be replaced? I would prefer a Service Technician
worked in my cellar.
Opening the unit will void your warranty. Service
Technicians are qualified to perform installation and recommended
maintenance. They are not; however, trained to analyze
intricate issues associated with your unit, therefore, we
ask that you send your unit to the factory for analysis by
a Vinothèque engineer.
Where can I locate a list of Service Technicians in my area? Why
can’t I click on a map that will give me a local technician?
We strive to identify only the best qualified Technicians
and therefore continually update our list. Unfortunately,
we are unable to update our website as rapidly as necessary.
We are currently developing a system to quickly provide you
with local technicians. Please, contact our Customer
Service Department at 1-800-343-9463 for a Non- Warranty
Technician Referral near you. We cannot guaranty or
warranty any work done by an outside service technician. All
of our referrals are independent contractors with experience
working on our products. In the event that a non warranty
technician works on a malfunctioning unit with warranty,
all warranty is voided. Remember, without prior approval,
a technician may VOID your warranty if your unit’s
rivets are removed. Please see warranty policy.
Does Vinotheque cover technician costs?
QT - if the cabinet is less
than two years old and all troubleshooting has been exhausted,
Vinotheque will contact a service technician and send necessary
warranty approved documentation to the technician. If
the technician finds that the unit has failed due to misuse,
abuse or neglect by the customer, then the customer is responsible
for all technician charges.
WK, XLT and Extreme – Vinotheque
does not authorize warranty work on a WhisperKOOL unit. All
WhisperKOOL warranty repairs are performed by Vinothèque
specialists in our facility. Replacements are allowed
at the discretion of Vinothèque.
Split System - When a unit is
less than two years old, all troubleshooting has been exhausted
and the unit has been evaluated by the installing technician,
Vinothèque will ensure the customer signs a warranty
agreement that includes terms and conditions: the unit
failed because of a manufacture problem, repair or
replacement will be the responsibility of Vinothèque,
but if the unit has failed due to installation error, misuse,
abuse, neglect, etc., then the owner is responsible for all
charges relating to the repair or replacement of the unit. Vinotheque
will contact a technician to evaluate the unit, identify the
cause of problem and make any necessary repairs. If the
technician determines the failure was due to installation error,
misuse, abuse, neglect, etc., the technician’s invoice
will be forwarded to the customer.

|
How often will the unit be running? Why does the unit
run so frequently?
If your unit is new, it will run frequently for the initial
2-3 weeks. Cabinets will run constantly for several weeks,
the size of your wine collections will contribute to the
duration of initial run time. During the summer, it
will run more frequently than the winter. Warmer
climates constitute more frequent use than cooler climates. The
unit is designed to run 80% of the time and has a maximum
90 minute run cycle with 5 minute defrost cycle.
|
My brand new unit is not cooling. Why is my new cabinet not
cooling?
Given the design of our cooling units, one must allow
2-3 weeks for the unit to reach its optimal temperature, see
page 16 in the Owner’s Manual.
|
Thermostat shows PRB
PRB indicates the probe is not properly connected. Check
the probe plug and ensure it is securely attached. If
connection is secure and PRB continues, a new thermostat
will be required.
|
How long should the PDT last?
PDT units operate from a motherboard, very similar to
that in your computer. Given the delicacy of this circuit
board, it is difficult to determine the life expectancy of
a PDT unit. The PDT includes a 2-year warranty.
|
What is the difference between PDT Jr. and PDT?
The PDT has an LED display that shows liquid temperature. The
PDT Jr. does not have a display. Both thermostats are
digital with three push button.
|
Why is water leaking from the front of my WhisperKOOL unit?
This occurs when excessive build-up of dust collects
on the interworking parts of the cooling unit, often from
construction, and/or lack of regular maintenance. Both
possibilities can result in a clogged drain line. WhisperKOOL
units require a relatively dust-free environment. Please
refer to pages 16 and 17 or your owner’s manual for
more information.
Why is water leaking from the front of my cabinet?
If your cabinet is leaking due to a internal clogged
drain line please see instructions: (attach instructions)
|
Why is water leaking from the rear?
Water leaks from the back of the unit when humidity does
not dissipate or the drain line is not attached. Ensure
the condensate evaporator is appropriately set. Please
see page 17 of your owner’s manual for additional information.
|
Why is my unit icing?
There are three reasons this may occur:
1. The thermostat is not correctly sensing temperature
2. The thermostat may be set too low
3. The unit is low on Freon charge
Resolutions to this issue can be located on page
17 of your owner’s manual

What other troubleshooting can I perform on the unit?
If all above troubleshooting has been performed, please
call Vinothèque Wine Cellars Customer Service Department
at 1-800-343-9463.

What is the difference between units: QT vs. WK (in a cabinet);
SS vs. Extreme, etc?
Options for Cabinet cooling systems: QT and WhisperKOOL. The
QT system is built into the cabinet and offers quiet wine
preservation. The WhisperKOOL system offers equally
superior wine preservation and can be removed from the cabinet
for maintenance.
Three options for cellar cooling: XLT, The Split System
and The Extreme:
- The XLT offers a 30° differential and “through
the wall mounting/installation”
- The Split System hooks together with small refrigeration
line, so with the proper cellar design, an exhaust room is
not necessary. Additionally, the Split System does not require
a large quantity of air to cool and the system will operate
in 0° temperature with a 55° differential.
- The Extreme can be ducted, exhausts outside and offers
a quiet cellar with remote mount thermostat. This system
will operate in 0° temperature with a 55° differential
and automatic shut off to prevent overheating.
|
What maintenance is required?
Vacuum the Condenser Coils, on the back of the QT cabinet
every 30 days. Vacuum the front and back WhisperKOOL coils
every thirty days. Please see your owner’s manual,
each unit has specific maintenance requirement.
|
What type of and how much refrigerant is required for cooling?
Both WhisperKOOL and QT require Freon. Quantity
may be obtained from our Customer Service Department at 1-800-343-9463. This
information is now posted within the unit.

What effect do glass doors have on a wine cabinet or cellar?
Some people find glass doors on their wine cabinets and
cellar doors quite attractive. Glass doors also allow
one to beautifully display a precious wine collection. While
glass doors may involve a minimal decrease in efficiency,
Vinotheque uses only the finest quality and most state of
the art materials to protect your wine investment. If
you have a glass door, it is highly suggested that you upgrade
your cooling unit to the next size up. You may also
visit our website to purchase a wine cellar door.
|
What if I don’t have an area to run my drain line to?
There are a few solutions to this challenge.
The simplest solution: get a tall plant and place the
drain line at the base of the plant. While the quantity
of condensation will probably not be adequate to sustain
your plant, it will offer an outlet.
Another solution: run the line through the wall
to a location where adequate drainage exists or can be created. Ensure
the drain line is incased in a PCV pipe to eliminate condensation
between the walls.
|
How are filters attached?
The filter attaches to the front (cellar side) of the
WhisperKOOL above the fans on the evaporator grill. Velcro
strips are needed and included with filter orders.
|
Why are the Split System diagrams unclear?
Vinothèque constantly improves products and product
information. This issue is currently being addressed
and will be found in the next edition of our Split System
Owner’s Manual.
|
Where is the power cord located on my cabinet?
When facing the back of your cabinet, see the bottom
left corner.
|
Do you provide custom stain matches?
